Transforming emotions into Acrylic and Oil Paintings, Modern Sculpture and Print

Drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, welding and metalwork, woodworking, and ceramics; these are some of the skills and experience I bring as an artist. I began making my versions of modern sculpture in my grandfather's workshop before I could see the top of the workbench. I remember once hearing my mom ask "Where's Raymie?" and the reply of my dad, "He's in the basement making sawdust."
Over time my oil paintings, the products of my sawdust and other original art have earned recognition and numerous awards for excellence and innovation, including Best of Show in international juried competition.
I am at a loss to find a single description of my artistic style. In my acrylic, watercolor and oil painting, if the painting demands a very controlled use of object or line, that is what I paint. I am at a loss to find a single description of my artistic style. In my acrylic, watercolor and oil painting, if the painting demands a very controlled use of object or line, that is what I paint. However, at times a loose or free brush stroke is needed. I'll give the painting or sculpture what it asks for. When it clicks, my modern sculpture and other original art is visually stunning and emotionally impactful.
All of my original art, whether modern sculpture, oil painting or monoprint is the product of investigation that begins with: I wonder... or What if. This leads to a vision for a series of artistic works that complete the developing vision.

All of my original art, whether modern sculpture, oil painting or monoprint is the product of investigation that begins with: I wonder... or What if. This leads to a vision for a series of artistic works that complete the developing vision.
My creative process extends to the development of materials. I use molecular analysis to formulate my unique ceramic glazes. I make charcoal and pastel drawing tools, inks and paints, and use my woodworking skills to frame paintings or make pedestals for my sculpture.
As an artist, I am totally captured by “Process”. The more involved a process the more obsessed I become. As an example, for much of the past 30 years my focus was ceramics. Although I had never seen a pot thrown, I decided to make pottery on the wheel. I bought a wheel, 500lbs of clay, a small kiln at a garage sale, and Elizabeth Woody’s book. I read and practiced and within a few months had my first sales event. My quest to learn everything ceramic took me to many museums including the Freer Gallery of the Smithsonian where I studied Chinese Pottery sherds. Through my research I learned to formulate my own glazes and build kilns to achieve specific effects. However, all of this was done alone, without guidance or the company of other artists. I felt if I were to grow, I would need to join a community of artists and to my amazement, without ever having taken an art class, I was admitted to an MFA program.
I quickly learned that I had huge holes in my self-taught education but now my learning was directed by my professors, and I quickly progressed and graduated from making functional ware to sculpture. I am drawn to sculpture because I love the idea of permanence in my art. I am now using my sculpture in clay as the basis for bronze casting. I’m working with a local art foundry and recently completed my second bronze.
The art I am presenting within this website also includes Oil and acrylic painting and monoprints. Currently, my print gallery primarily displays acrylic Gelli prints but I also have quite a collection of linocuts and mezzotint prints. I find the Gelli process captivating. These prints are created requiring as many as 15-20 pulls of the print from the plate to achieve the desired depth of image.
While I use a variety of materials and processes in each project my methodology is consistent. In creating I start with my smallest most basic level of artistic competence and build the project from there. Over the years as my competence grew, it became easier to find that starting place. This philosophy has enabled me to fearlessly try new methods, materials, and processes.
I find my self-awareness of the creative process particularly interesting. For example, the inspiration for the statue, One Golden Memory began with a televised baseball game. When the satellite feed was interrupted, and the picture dissolved into frozen pixels I began thinking about representing digital information sculpturally. From there I started thinking of memory, how we store information in the digital age in bits and bytes, and how would I sculpturally represent a bit? The result is, One Golden Memory.
